War Unit Reflection
The past two months in Humanities have highlighted war in a new way. We learned how storytelling can change someone's perspective on the war so quickly. After spending quite a bit of time analyzing these new stories in depth, you can really understand what different soldiers had to go through each day.
One of the many war stories we read was The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. I enjoyed the simple complexity of each Vietnam war story in this book. I enjoyed digging deep into the text. Through our literature circles and class discussions, I have a new take on reading and analyzing stories. I have not done much analytical thinking in past English classes. Using analytical thinking to understand a text is something that is new to me. I appreciate Sarah taking the time to make sure we understood how to really dive deep into understanding the text. I think this is important because we will be reading more difficult texts later on in the school year.
I also really liked learning about the Vietnam Anti War Movement in our Counter Culture project. Having the ability to teach the class about an important time in US History was something unique. I really liked that we were able to come up with our own way to teach the class. Something I appreciated was that we were not told how to teach the class. We were given objectives that we had to complete. Other than that, the rest of the presentation was on our own. I feel that our presentation was successful and everyone in the class took something away from it.
As a learner, I feel there are many things that I took away from this unit. Over the past few months, I have become a better reader, writer and speaker. I have gone through multiple critiques on my writing, have spent a large amount of time reading inside and outside of class, and I am encouraged to participate in class discussions. I have blossomed into a better student and learner the past few months. Because of this, I look forward to the rest of the year in Humanities. I cannot wait to see what is next for us in the future.
